Don’t Be Caught Dead In The Water!

Dead men tell no tales - so liven up matey! Hurry up and down that cup of joe! It’s Monday and prime time to showcase a new coffee mug. Today’s mug is a new release featuring the upcoming blockbuster: Pirates of the Caribbean - Dead Men Tell No Tales. Portrayed on this mug are the characters of Henry Turner, Carina Smyth, and Captain Jack Sparrow played by, of course, none other than

Johnny Depp. The recent release of this mug and other film related merchandise just so happened to coincide with a surprise appearance of Johnny Depp as Jack Sparrow on the Pirates of the Caribbean ride at Disneyland that went viral all over the web. This morning I decided I might as well ride the Jack Sparrow viral marketing wave and feature this as my Mug of the Day Monday.

As the fifth installment in this film franchise, normally I would give it a rather large eye roll. However, I am very intrigued by this film for a couple of reasons. One is the actor Javier Bardem who plays the villain. He absolutely creeped me out as the baddie in “No Country For Old Men,” and I am excited to see him in this role. The other reason is I am curious about the story line. From trailers released it appears they have cast the perfect doppelganger to portray a young Jack Sparrow. I am always intrigued by origin stories that show how a character became who they are and I am hoping this film sheds light on Jack Sparrow’s past. We shall see. Either way, this is a very cool looking mug that can serve as the perfect reminder to not start your Monday morning dead in the water!

This mug is quite ornate with a lot of neat details. The front gold skull and crossbones (Jolly Roger) is a ''melted'' seal in bas relief, meaning it has a degree of texture to it. Also the handle crafted of sculpted bones is a nice touch. One complaint of this mug is it’s size. In the description online it says it holds 10 oz which seems pretty small to me. I prefer a larger coffee mug so I have to refill less often. Another complaint is that it is not dishwasher or microwave safe. I suppose this was a compromise for having such ornate decor.
